Linear Keypad & Intercom Repair: The The Woodlands Owner’s Guide

Linear keypad and intercom repair in The Woodlands typically runs $145-$385 installed, depending on whether we’re reviving the existing unit, swapping in a new OEM keypad, or replacing a failed intercom board. We stock Linear-compatible keypads and common intercom components on the truck, so most repairs happen on the first visit. The usual discovery is simple: the keypad lights up but the gate won’t move, or the intercom buzzes but no voice comes through. You’ll probably notice the failure right when you need it most, which is how these things always seem to work.

Which Linear Models This Applies To

We service the full Linear lineup common in The Woodlands: the AK-11 and AK-21 keypads, the RE-1 and RE-2 receiver boards, the AM-KP keypad with built-in radio, and the older IEI-style keypads that Linear distributed before consolidating under Nortek. Identification matters more than a model number here. Before you call, open the keypad housing and look for a sticker with the part number. If the sticker’s faded, measure the faceplate: AK-11s run roughly 3×5 inches, while AM-KP units are closer to 4×6. The main compatibility gotcha in The Woodlands: older Linear receivers from the 1990s can’t always talk to new keypads without a receiver swap. We’ll check yours before quoting anything.

On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: genuine Linear keypads cost more but hold their programming through Texas humidity and the occasional power surge. Quality aftermarket units work fine when paired with a matching receiver, but we’ve seen cheaper knockoffs lose programming after a hard rain. For intercom boards, we recommend OEM or a documented-equivalent replacement. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Linear, so our loyalty is to what actually works on your gate, not a brand catalog.

Signs Your Linear Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

Signs Your Linear Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing
  • Keypad lights but gate won’t move. The keypad’s transmitting, but the receiver isn’t hearing it. Usually a receiver board failure or a wiring fault between the keypad and the gate motor control board.
  • Works sometimes, then not. Classic bad wiring or a keypad membrane that’s starting to delaminate. Humidity gets behind the membrane and shorts the contacts intermittently. We see this constantly in The Woodlands, where the humidity doesn’t take months off.
  • Intercom hums but no voice. The speaker or microphone is dead, or the board’s audio circuit failed. If you can hear the hum but no voice in either direction, the board is usually the culprit.
  • Keypad works, intercom doesn’t. These are separate circuits in most Linear units. The keypad sends a code; the intercom carries audio. One failing doesn’t mean the other’s fine forever.
  • Random buzzing or crackling from the intercom speaker. A failing capacitor or a loose ground connection. Ignore it long enough and the board can take out the keypad circuit with it.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a Linear keypad swap in The Woodlands, expect $145-$220 for a standard AK-11 or AK-21 replacement including the keypad, labor, and programming. An intercom board replacement typically runs $260-$385, depending on whether it’s a simple board swap or we’re also replacing the speaker and microphone. If you need both the keypad and the intercom board addressed, most jobs fall in the $320-$480 range. The written price you get before we start includes the part, the labor, programming, and a photo record of what we found and what we installed. Under Clause 1 of The Haven Standard, that price is on paper in your hand before anyone picks up a tool.

The keypad itself costs more if your system still uses the older 10-dip-switch coding instead of the newer auto-learn receivers, because we’re matching a harder-to-find part. We’ll tell you which one you have before quoting.

You can safely check a few things yourself: whether the keypad’s getting power (most have an LED that lights when a button’s pressed), whether the wiring behind the keypad looks corroded or chewed, and whether the gate motor itself responds to a separate remote or button. If the gate works from another control but not from the keypad, you’ve isolated the problem to the keypad or its receiver.

What we’d rather you not touch: the receiver board inside the gate motor housing, and anything involving the intercom’s audio wiring. Gate motors carry line voltage even when the gate’s stationary, and probing around a live control board with a multimeter you use once a year isn’t worth the trip to urgent care. If your gate is on a slope in The Woodlands or carries heavy iron, the safety edges and photo-eyes also need re-verification after any keypad work, which is part of our standard visit. Call (346) 296-3138 and we’ll have a live person on the line, any hour.
