Linear Welding & Fabrication: The The Woodlands Owner’s Guide

How owners find the problem: the gate starts dragging on one corner, or a hinge plate tears loose from the post, or a weld on the slide track cracks clean through after years of Texas heat cycling and caliche-shifted concrete. You’ll hear it before you see it, usually. A gate that used to hum now groans.

Which Linear Models This Applies To

Linear’s residential and light commercial line spans slide gates, swing gates, and barrier arms. The welding and fabrication work we do covers the steel infrastructure those operators move: gate frames, hinge posts, track rail, wheel carriages, bracket mounts, and the occasional custom arm extension. Common Linear operators we see in The Woodlands include the LRA slide gate series, the LSO swing series, and the heavier DC-powered models that spec out on longer runs.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha that matters: Linear doesn’t sell a universal weld-on bracket kit. The operator model determines the mounting geometry, and an LRA arm bracket is not interchangeable with a DoorKing or Mighty Mule equivalent. If your operator’s nameplate is faded or gone, we match by measuring the arm throw and bracket bolt pattern rather than guessing from a catalog photo. It’s the difference between a three-hour job and a return visit.

On OEM versus aftermarket: for weld-in structural repairs, OEM brackets are fine when the operator is under five years old and the mounting surface is clean. For older Linear operators or any repair where the original steel has already cracked once, we prefer aftermarket steel stock cut and drilled to spec. You get a thicker wall at the stress point and a cleaner fit than a universal bracket will ever give you.

Signs Your Linear Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• Gate sags at the latch corner. The hinge weld or the hinge plate itself has started to give. What looks like alignment drift is usually a crack propagating through the heat-affected zone where the hinge was originally welded.
• Track rattles when the gate rolls. A weld holding the track to its mounting plate has broken free, or the track has developed a bow from repeated thermal expansion. The rattle gets worse in summer.
• Operator trips its obstruction sensor repeatedly. The gate is binding at a welded joint that’s now misaligned. The Linear board reads the resistance as an obstruction and reverses.
• Visible rust weeping from a joint. Moisture has gotten into a weld that was never sealed. In The Woodlands humidity, that rust line means internal corrosion is already eating the weld from the inside out.
• Wheel carriage hangs up at the same spot. A weld bead on the track has cracked or a wheel bracket has warped. The carriage jams at a single fixed point every pass.

Fabricating a new bracket or hinge plate runs $350 to $550. A full track section replacement with new steel and mounting hardware runs $550 to $850 depending on length and whether we need to lift and rehang the gate.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely inspect your Linear gate: look for visible cracks at weld joints, run a finger along the track for rough spots, and check whether the gate sits level when closed. That’s useful information to have before you call.

What you should not do is grind out and reweld a load-bearing weld on a moving gate. A failed weld on a gate post or track carries stored tension from the gate’s own weight. If the gate shifts while you’re working on it, you’re looking at crushed fingers or worse. Welding galvanized steel also releases zinc fumes that will make you sick without proper ventilation.
