Here is what a failing set actually sounds and looks like, in order of progression:
- Drag mark or flat spot on the roller. The wheel stops rolling and starts sliding. You will see a flat, polished surface on the nylon, sometimes with heat discoloration. The cause is almost always the bearing seizing or the roller taking weight it was never designed to carry.
- Gate slows mid-travel then jerks. The BFT motor is fighting a mechanical bind. The controller is compensating with more current, which is why the operator feels hot to the touch after a cycle. The hinge has stiffened and the roller is scrubbing the track.
- Grinding or squealing at the post during the first and last 20 degrees of travel. That is the hinge pin galling inside a dry or egged-out bushing. Once it starts, the pin wears oval and the gate begins to sag. You will also see the bottom rail scrape the ground on the closing side.
- Operator reversing mid-cycle with no obstruction. The motor’s current sensor is tripping because the gate is suddenly heavier to move. Many owners here in The Woodlands call this a motor problem. It is not. It is a hinge and roller problem the motor is telling you about.
- Visible play when you push the gate leaf by hand. Stand at the latch end and rock the leaf back along its travel plane.
