BFT Welding & Fabrication: The The Woodlands Owner’s Guide
When a BFT gate component cracks, snaps, or tears out of its mounting, the fix is usually a welded repair or a fabricated replacement bracket, hinge, or mounting plate, not a whole new operator. In The Woodlands, we stock common BFT-compatible steel and aluminum weldments on the truck and can fabricate custom pieces in our shop, with most jobs running $240 to $680 installed depending on the part and the weld complexity. Most welding and fabrication calls for BFT gates in The Woodlands come to us after a hinge tears loose, an operator mounting plate cracks at the weld, or a custom iron gate sags because a factory bracket was never right for the gate’s weight.
What this looks like in practice: you hear a metallic pop mid-cycle, the gate lists to one side, or the operator is torquing against a broken mount and throwing limit errors. You don’t need a new motor. You need the broken joint repaired and the load path corrected so it doesn’t recur.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
This covers the BFT swing and slide operators we see most in The Woodlands: the Deimos, Phobos, Rigel, and Sub series on swing gates, plus the Aries and Icaro slide lines. The welding and fabrication work typically involves the mounting plate, gate hinge tabs, rack brackets for slide gates, or the post anchor plate rather than anything inside the gearbox housing. The part that fails first is almost always the interface between the operator and the gate or post, not the operator itself.
Identifying the right piece is straightforward on BFT: the mounting plate has a model-specific bolt pattern (Deimos plates are not interchangeable with Phobos plates, even though both are roughly the same footprint), and the hinge tab thickness matters. BFT hinge brackets on The Woodlands installations are often 5mm to 8mm steel; if a previous installer welded a 3mm tab onto a heavy custom gate, it fails prematurely. For welded repairs, we match or exceed the original plate thickness and use a gusset where the factory design left a stress riser. We are an independent service provider, not affiliated with BFT, and we carry both OEM plates for exact-fit replacements and fabricated equivalents where the OEM part is backordered or the gate was never built to accept standard hardware.
One compatibility gotcha we see regularly in The Woodlands: post anchor plates on BFT swing operators are powder-coated mild steel. On gates installed near sprinkler heads or in low spots, that coating gets compromised, and the plate rusts at the bolt bores. By the time the plate tears, the bolts are the only thing holding the operator to the post. We replace the plate and move or cap the sprinkler head in the same visit.
Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

- Gate sags or scrapes at the latch end. This usually means a hinge or hinge tab has stretched or cracked at the weld. The gate’s own weight is now hanging on one hinge instead of two or three, and every open/close cycle is working the crack wider.
- Operator shifts or rocks when it cycles. A broken or cracked mounting plate lets the operator torque against the remaining bolts. BFT operators are rigidly mounted; any visible movement during travel is the mount failing, and the operator is trying to tear itself off the post.
- Loud pop heard during a cycle, then the gate drifts or hangs. That’s a weld letting go under load. The gate will often still run, but the geometry has changed, and the operator is now pushing through a misaligned load path, which overloads the remaining joints.
- Rust staining at a bolt or weld joint. On BFT plates, rust bleeding from a bolt bore or weld edge means the coating failed and the metal is thinning from the inside. In The Woodlands’ humidity and rain, this progresses faster than most owners expect.
- Gate moves fine but the operator sounds labored or throws intermittent limit errors. A cracked bracket flexes instead of transferring force. The operator’s encoder reads the travel, gets confused mid-cycle, and throws a fault. The motor is fine; the flex in the broken joint is the problem.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In The Woodlands, BFT welding and fabrication jobs for us typically run between $240 and $680 installed. That includes the on-site assessment, the welded repair or fabricated replacement part, fitment and alignment, and a photo record of the finished work. Here’s the breakdown:
- Hinge tab or small bracket repair: $240-$350
- Operator mounting plate replacement (OEM or fabricated equivalent): $320-$480
- Post anchor plate replacement with rust remediation: $380-$550
- Custom fabricated bracket or reinforcement for a non-standard gate: $450-$680
The price gets written down and handed to you before any work starts. If we find the fabrication is more involved than the initial assessment suggested, we stop and requote rather than surprising you at the end. Every welding and fabrication job carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair fails within a year, we make it right at no additional charge. Before we leave, you get a photo log of the weld or part, the part number if a replacement was used, and the alignment readings if we adjusted the gate geometry.
DIY or Call Us?

Here’s where it splits. You can safely identify the problem: inspect the mounting plate for cracks, look at the hinge tabs for separation from the gate frame, and check for rust bleeding at bolt holes. Photograph what you see and send it to us if you want a preliminary read over the phone. What you should not do is weld on a bracket or hinge while it is still attached to the operator or gate. BFT mounting plates carry live load; if the plate or hinge lets go while you’re working, the gate can shift suddenly. More importantly, a weld on a cracked plate without correcting the underlying alignment issue just moves the stress to the next joint and fails again within months. High-tension gate hardware and operator mounts are not a safe at-home welding project. Call us at (346) 296-3138 and we will give you a written price before any work begins.
FAQs
A properly reinforced welded repair on a BFT gate typically lasts the life of the gate, because we correct the load path and add a gusset rather than re-welding the same crack. The original failure usually came from undersized steel or a bad alignment decision at installation, so fixing only the crack without addressing that will repeat the failure. Give us a call at (346) 296-3138 for an on-site assessment and a written quote.
It depends on where the crack is and how much metal remains at the load point. A short crack at a non-critical spot can be welded and reinforced; a crack through a bolt bore or across the main torque path usually means replacement, because the threaded hole is compromised and the plate has already deformed. We will show you the crack, explain the decision, and give you the price before we do anything.
Most BFT weld repairs and bracket replacements are done in one visit, usually two to three hours including cool-down and alignment checks. If we need to fabricate a custom piece in the shop first, the job may take a second visit, and we will tell you that at the quote stage so you are not surprised.
We keep common BFT mounting plates, hinge tabs, and post anchor plates on the truck for Deimos, Phobos, Rigel, Sub, and Aries installations, along with steel stock and gusset material for custom fixes. We also stock parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls, so if we find a secondary issue while we’re on-site, we usually have the part to address it in the same visit. Call (346) 296-3138 and we will confirm what we have on the truck for your model.
Name what you found. Name what it costs. Name what you left behind. We write all three down on every BFT welding and fabrication job in The Woodlands, and you keep the record.
If your BFT gate is cracked, sagging, or tearing its mount, call us now at (346) 296-3138. We will schedule the dispatch, give you a written price before any steel gets welded, and leave you with a photographic record of exactly what was done.
