DoorKing Access Control Installation: The The Woodlands Owner’s Guide

Most DoorKing access control replacements in The Woodlands run between $480 and $1,150 installed, depending on whether you’re swapping a keypad, a telephone entry board, or a full controller. We stock DoorKing-compatible boards, keypads, and power supplies on the truck, so a single-family driveway system can usually be diagnosed and running the same day we arrive. The way owners typically discover the failure is simple: the gate stops answering the code that worked yesterday, or the keypad lights up but nothing happens when the relay should fire.

If you’re standing at your gate right now with a DoorKing keypad that’s gone quiet, here’s the short version. Something in the chain between the keypad and the gate motor has failed. It’s usually one of three things: the keypad membrane itself, the control board that processes the entry code, or the low-voltage wiring between them. Adrian Vance has been tracing exactly these failures since 2014, first in commercial access control and now on residential gates all over The Woodlands.

Which DoorKing Models This Applies To

We install and replace access control components across the DoorKing product line, but most The Woodlands residential gates we service fall into one of two families. The 1800-series (1812, 1814, 1815, 1830) is the classic apartment-style telephone entry system, still running on plenty of subdivision entries and larger properties. The 6000-series keypads and the 1500-series entry keypads show up on individual driveways. If you’re not sure which one you have, open the enclosure and look for the model sticker on the inside of the cabinet door. Every DoorKing board we’ve handled carries a printed model number and a date code on the PCB itself.

The compatibility gotcha most owners don’t know: DoorKing changed keypad wiring between the older 1812 and the newer 1812 Classic, and a late-1990s keypad will not drop into a 2015 cabinet without a wiring adapter. We’ve seen The Woodlands homeowners buy a used keypad on eBay, wire it in, and get nothing because the pinout moved. A second checkable detail: DoorKing keypads that sit in direct afternoon sun in Montgomery County typically fail in five to eight years, not the twelve-plus you’d get on a shaded north-facing pier. The UV eats the membrane switch contacts. When you call us, we’ll match what you actually have, not what the listing title claimed.

OEM parts from DoorKing carry the factory warranty and identical connectors. Quality aftermarket equivalents exist for some keypads and power transformers, and we stock both. We’ll tell you the price difference up front, and we’ll tell you which aftermarket parts we’ve had to pull back out. On access control specifically, we lean OEM for boards and keypads because the failure rate difference isn’t worth the savings, and because DoorKing firmware updates sometimes refuse to talk to aftermarket chips.

Signs Your DoorKing Access Control Installation Is Failing

Signs Your DoorKing Access Control Installation Is Failing
  • The keypad accepts codes but the gate doesn’t move. This is the classic relay failure. The keypad beeps, the display reacts, but the relay that sends voltage to the gate motor never closes. We test this first, because it’s the part that confuses owners into replacing a perfectly good keypad.
  • Codes work intermittently, usually worse after rain. In The Woodlands, moisture in a corroded wiring splice or a failing keypad gasket produces exactly this pattern. The board gets a partial signal, fires sometimes, and behaves worse on humid mornings. It’s not the motor; it’s a low-voltage path losing contact.
  • The keypad buzzes constantly or sounds like static. A failing power supply or a shorted speaker on phone-entry boards causes this. If your DoorKing sounds like it’s trying to talk under water, the issue is usually the transformer or a capacitor swelling on the board.
  • You have to enter the code twice before it registers. First press wakes the board, second press opens the gate. That’s a telltale of aging membrane switches. The carbon contact still works, barely, but the conductive path has degraded to the point where the first press only registers partially.
  • The gate opened by itself last night. A failing relay can stick closed, or a phone-entry board with an old firmware version can glitch on a power flicker and send an open command. If your gate was found open at 3 a.m. with no code entered anywhere in memory, the access control board is the prime suspect.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s the price picture for access control work on DoorKing systems in The Woodlands, written the same way we’d hand it to you before starting:

  • Keypad replacement (6000-series, surface mount): $300-$450 installed, including the keypad, wiring harness, and programming of your entry codes.
  • Telephone entry board replacement (1800-series): $550-$850 installed, depending on whether the board is a direct swap or requires a housing retrofit.
  • Full controller/cabinet upgrade: $850-$1,150 installed when the enclosure, power supply, and board all need replacing together.
  • Diagnostic visit, no parts needed: $95, which we credit toward the repair if we do the work the same day.

Every price above includes the part, labor, programming, and the documented photo record we leave with you. The written quote you sign before work starts is the price you pay when the technician finishes. No surprise labor line, no “unexpected complications” add-on. If a splice is corroded and the wiring run needs attention, we’ll show it to you, price it separately, and let you decide.

All work carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the new board fails or the programming loses its codes within a year, we come back and make it right at no charge.

DoorKing access control runs on low voltage, usually 16 to 24 volts AC from a step-down transformer. That’s not the kind of voltage that hurts anyone, but the terminals inside a live cabinet sit directly next to the high-voltage line feeding the transformer. If you’re not comfortable with a multimeter and insulating the incoming power before probing, stop there. The danger isn’t electrocution from the control board; it’s shorting a tool across the wrong terminal and sending 120 volts through a board that costs $400 to replace.

The two checks an owner can safely do: confirm the breaker feeding the gate is on, and visually inspect the keypad for cracks, moisture inside the lens, or corroded contacts where the wiring enters. If you see white or green fuzz on any connector, that’s corrosion, and it’s a repair call. Beyond that, DoorKing boards are packed with tiny jumpers, programming pins, and firmware-version dependencies that turn honest DIY attempts into expensive board replacements. Call (346) 296-3138 and we’ll send a background-checked technician with a multimeter and the right part. You get a written diagnosis before a single tool touches your gate.
